Jayaraman is a student of Medicine who is fascinated by the world of computers. He spends long hours at the Computer Institute in the neighborhood, learning and experimenting with software. At home in the orthodox Brahmin household, the father is skeptical of his son's inclinations. 'You seem to be interested in anything but your chosen field of study', he rebukes Jayaraman.

A chance meeting with a friend at the Medical College affects Jayaraman profoundly. The friend's father has had a setback in the speculation market, and is seriously ill. To get over it, he seeks Jayaraman's help in developing software that would effectively forecast trends in the market and minimize risk. Jayaraman's close friend Rita is party to all the activity as she keeps him company in his pursuits. Soon they hit pay dirt as Jayaraman comes up with a program that does just the thing.

As they ride high on the success of the software, people around warm up to Jayaraman's genius - his father greedily eyes the paycheque his son has earned; suggesting that he could sell it to someone he knows for a sizeable amount. Rita's father too, a businessman offers to buy it at any cost. All this has an unsettling effect on Jayaraman; he insists it was all only to help out a friend in need; but is anyone listening? He must now struggle to protect his precious code from being pirated - he rushes to the Institute and locks up the program in a floppy disk; it is now his alone and none can take unfair advantage of it.

At the hospital, his friend's father has passed away. Disillusioned by the fluctuating fortunes of the stock market, he cautions his son from dabbling any further in the trade. 'Have a bit of land back home; intend to work hard and earn a living', he confides to Jayaraman in parting.

As he drives away, Jayaraman cuts a picture of desolation; here was something he'd done for a friend who no longer needed it. On the other hand were businessmen who'd stop at nothing to lay their hands on it. He realizes the futility of his work; and the conflict it has wrought on his relationships. Tossing the floppy (and the precious program inside) into oblivion, Jayaraman shrugs and turns his back on the entire episode. It is now time to catch up on other things.
